Water Weight is a short film written and directed by Leah O’Riordan. The film follows Joy, a young girl in an inpatient psychiatric facility who is struggling to recover from an eating disorder called anorexia. In an attempt to earn weekend leave to visit her father, Joy must gain weight, which she fakes by drinking a substantial amount of water before a weigh-in, a trick called ‘water-loading’. This trick ultimately backfires, yet presents as a blessing in disguise, leading Joy to accept the idea of recovery. The film spreads a positive message, one that shows that eating disorders can affect anybody, but that recovering from them is possible.
